scented invitations

Have you ever noticed how powerful the effect of scent is? It's amazing, the memories and feelings a certain scent can elicit. My morning routine would be all together disquieting without the comforting aromatic melange of coffee and nag champa incense.A scent can take you back to a rapturous day from your childhood or the day you got your dream job.I think scents are such an under-utilized tool in the event arsenal.  From cocktail hour...

now accepting bitcoin

You know what? You're pretty hip. You're what "experts" call an "early adopter" and I think that's pretty cool. That's why we now accept Bitcoin as a way to pay for your custom wedding invitations and stationery. There are all sorts of great reasons to use Bitcoin instead of paying by check or credit and you can find out more about it here (because, let's face it: this is still pretty bleeding edge). If you're interested in buying...

is this update beautiful?

Can we talk about this for a second? It appears that Vitra (the source for Eames goods overseas) is offering the classic lounger and ottoman in black/black. It's certainly striking, but how do you think it stacks up to the original? It kind of reminds me of the outdoor/plastic version of 2012. I think it's interesting, but I'm not yet convinced it's a step forward from what we already have. What do you think?...

invitations for the end of the world

Our local afr location contacted me about creating the invitations for their annual showcase/networker. Since the theme was "Countdown to Chaos," we decided to create a networking "survival kit" that was hand-delivered to the event's VIPs.I wanted these survival kits to feel like they had been sitting, long-neglected, in the corner of some wedding designer's warehouse. I painted and distressed cigar boxes and fabricated a textured foam bed for the survival tools. The letterpress invitation lined the lid...

what matters

To photograph your parents, who will hold hands and cry on the first row of the chapel. To photograph your sister dancing with that boy she will marry in three years. To photograph those kids who will grow up so, so quickly. To photograph your grandfather, who will pass away next spring. To photograph your first kiss as a married couple, your best friend busting out her signature dance moves, the flower girl asleep under...

how much is enough?

Striking the balance of adequate information information and adequate whitespace is the Stationers' Dilemma. On a recent menu project, the input I received from the client and the chef were pretty far removed from one another. (Fortunately, the client and the chef were great in helping me land on a typesetting that worked well for everyone.) My initial sketch included the word "Menu" at the top as well as the event's date. It also included the...

creative mornings

If you're a creative professional (and I think most wedding planners, designers, caterers, et al are) and you live in a town with a regular Creative Mornings meeting, you should be attending. They're free, there's food, and tons of inspiration. If, like me, you don't live in a town with a CM presence, why not create one? In the meantime, we can always watch from afar. Here's Aaron James Draplin's PDX CM talk. It's incredible. Caution, though: four...

this guy gets it

We all get email that leaves us shaking our head. I think this is the first time I've done so in amazement. The subject was "No finer press than A Fine Press." What a way to grab attention! G'Day (evening for you in FL) Matthew! Love the Facebook, website, and, most importantly, the stationery work!  You have a great sense of typography, color combos, and stock choice especially with Karen Ard stationery suite you did.  Surely you're...
