MUSIC MONDAYS: David Bazan

Music Mondays: because life’s better with a soundtrack.

I’m the son of a pastor.

I grew up playing among the pews of an evangelical church.

You may or may not understand how that particular fact colors my feelings toward David Bazan, but let me assure you it paints in vibrant color.

See, until David started belting that beautiful voice as the frontman for Pedro the Lion, I had never seen (or heard) someone wrestle with their faith in such an open, honest way. Well, that’s not fair. There were plenty of open, honest people around me, just not speaking in a language that resonated with me. Not the way he did.

I watched as David’s lyrics shifted – sometimes slightly, sometimes tectonically, from searching to doubting to cynicism.

It was almost painful, always haunting.

At some point, listening to David’s new works felt like walking into an old family home – so vaguely familiar, so strangely distant. I’d rather continue to struggle. To wrestle.

In the meantime, I’ll still let this sweet angel sing me to sleep.

I don’t think any other album has ever resonated with me the way this EP did with my fifteen-year-old self.

And then this came along.

If you’ve followed along this long, you might understand why I love this tune from one of David’s recent solo albums.

And please, for the love of all that is holy, check out this great interview with David by The Great Discontent.
